Samuel Barber’s 'lyric rhapsody' for soprano and orchestra, 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' (1947), is one of his most celebrated and complicated pieces. In comparison this thesis looks at the Van Heutsz Monument in Amsterdam, the Indië Monument Amstelveen and its counterpart at Zorgvlied, analysing commemorative events of these monuments, focusing especially on speech acts. Through the analysis of reader's responses this thesis shows how these novels are used as carriers of memory by second and third generation Indo. While Asta's ogen offers a straightforward account of a family history, Een meisje van honderd employs the same notion of family history through a mode of magical realism, placing the novel in a tradition of colonial writings as well as adopting a critical approach to such traditions. Starting point are two 'family chronicles': Asta's ogen by Eveline Stoel and Een meisje van honderd by Marion Bloem. Consequently, the notion of postmemory becomes important. It concerns narratives that are told and retold within the family. The memory is contained within the familial bond, implying ownership. It is also something that is cherished and maintained within families. The colonial legacy is what determines this identity. I argue that commemoration and the circulation of memory in the form of stories play a significant role in the shaping of Indo- identity. On the other hand, this thesis analyses what role these memories play in the performance of Indo-identity in the Netherlands. Second and third generation Indos reappropriate this discourse, developing a reflective mode of nostalgia that uncovers the complicated position of Indos in the Dutch Indies. Nostalgia, surprisingly, is an aspect that unites Dutch and Indos. This same discourse is prominent in Indo memory. Colonial memory in the Netherlands is characterized by a discourse of nostalgia that persisted since the beginning of the colony. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: on the one hand it examines the memory of the Dutch Indies that is shaped by trauma and nostalgia. This thesis regards both monuments and novels as 'lieux de mémoire'. Departing from the notion of the hybridity of Indos, who traditionally have a position between colonizer and colonized, this thesis analyses how the memory of the Dutch Indies influences second and third generation Indos in the Netherlands and how their identity is performed/ represented/ manifested through cultural artifacts. Carter. My thesis for the RMA Comparative Literary Studies was awarded the "Indische Letteren scriptieprijs" in 2015. The experience may even start you reading Proust in French or in the new English translation by William C. The sight and smell of the hawthorn blossom was particularly important to Proust in evoking childhood memories at Illiers-Combray in his Novel, and people come from all over the world at that particular time of the year to share it. The best time to visit is towards the end of April and during the first week in May when the hawthorn blossom is out on the hawthorn trees and hedges with the pink flowers and also those with the white. The Pre-Catalan is modelled on the garden in Paris of the same name and is a capricious mixture of eccentric architectural follies on a small scale and breathtaking vistas of trees and water-features, arranged on different levels and to be seen from different persepctival angles. The Pre-Catalan Garden at Illiers-Combray was laid out towards the end of the nineteenth century by the uncle of Marcel Proust, the great French novelist who spent part of his childhood there and which he described in his Novel, 'Remembrance of Things Past'.
